Elsanor Fire Department

Captain Steve Williams - 5304 (Retired)

Yesterday, October 16th 2009, I, Captain Steve Williams announced my retirement from the fire service. I have been a volunteer in the fire service for over 15 years, with the last 6 years being a volunteer with the Elsanor Fire and Rescue Department.

I am proud to list as my accomplishments during the past 6 years beginning with the fact that I was the first Elsanor Volunteer Fire Department Firefighter of the year, Thank you!

I was responsible for locating the 3 acres of land that was voted upon to purchase that will be the future home of the Elsanor Fire Dept, also myself along with Mary Williams conceived the initial design of the new station with a center office / training area with 3 drive thru bays located on either side of the main office section and after some slight changes were agreed upon by the other members of the dept that the design was voted upon and accepted.

I am happy to say that thru efforts of Secretary Mary Williams and myself that we were able to submit and be awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for new firefighter structure turnout gear for the entire fire department.

Another accomplishment was that I was able to obtain a retired City of Robertsdale Police car that still retained all the lights and sirens resulting in a support vehicle (5356) for the department.

I have always strived to be as courteous and professional as possible, even when others might have lost their composure in times of stress or conflict. I did not believe in belittling or condemning anybody in any department even though I might not agree with their objectives.

I was a Captain with the Elsanor Fire Dept and that is all I ever aspired to be. Not Chief, even though others might have thought so, I was just a dedicated member who tried to go above and beyond the volunteer call of duty. I never asked anyone in the Fire Department to do something that I did not do also.

I served with the Elsanor Fire Dept not only as a Captain, but in the past I was the President of the Fire Board, and I also held the position as a member of the Board of Directors with the Elsanor Fire Department

Working with the majority of the firefighters was a pleasure that I came to enjoy, and I wish them all well in there future endeavors.

Thank you for the friendships that were formed and forgive me if I might have stepped on some toes, my objective was for the good of the fire department and fire service in general
